WHAT HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHED:

JMEC was prime design consultant for preparing PS&E of six bridges, and was consultant for the independent check of PS&E for three other bridges.   JMEC performed seismic analysis and design, determined retrofit strategies, prepared plans, specifications and estimates, and provided as-needed construction design support services.

The Florence Avenue over Rio Hondo Channel is a 218-ft 3-span concrete girders on pier walls.   Maximum span is 85-ft, bridge width is 95-ft and carries 3 lanes of traffic in each traffic direction.  The original bridge was built in 50's and 60's, and was widened on both sides in 1975.  The expansion joints and joints between various structures are not adequately retrained.  The retrofit strategy was to improve connections among various structures and to prevent drop spans at the expansion joints.   The retrofit measurements included:
  • Add transverse shear blocks, seat extensions and abutment blockings at both abutments
  • Add pipe seat extensions at all expansion joints
  • Tie non-continuous pier walls by cable restrainers
  • Add exterior shear keys to all piers
The construction of the seismic retrofit was completed in conjunction with other roadway improvements.
